The fallow deer originally inhabited asia minor, southern Europe and north Africa, but it has been widely introduced elsewhere in the world. The first to arrive in NZ were three from Richmond Park in England, released in Nelson in 1864. Other introductions followed. Some succeeded, some didn't, but there are now fallow deer herds in a dozen or more localities scattered accross NZ. The largest populations are in the vicinity of Tapunui, Lake Wakatipu and Paparoa in the south island and Wanganui in the north island.
